Melatonin

melatonin is a naturally produced hormone made primarily by the pineal gland. Its primary role is to regulate your body’s internal clock—technically called the circadian rhythm—but its effects extend beyond just sleep.

Sleep regulation (core function)
Melatonin levels rise in response to darkness, signaling to your brain and body that it’s time to wind down. It doesn’t “knock you out” like a sedative; instead, it promotes sleep readiness by lowering alertness, reducing body temperature slightly, and coordinating timing of sleep cycles. This is why it’s often used for insomnia, jet lag, or shift work disruption.

Antioxidant and cellular protection
Melatonin is also a potent antioxidant. It helps neutralize free radicals and supports mitochondrial function, which is central to energy production and cellular repair. Unlike many antioxidants, it can cross cell membranes and even reach the brain easily.

Immune system modulation
It plays a regulatory role in immune responses—helping balance inflammation rather than simply boosting immunity. This can be relevant in conditions where chronic low-grade inflammation is present.

Hormonal coordination
Melatonin interacts with other endocrine pathways, influencing hormones related to stress (like cortisol), reproductive hormones, and metabolic signaling. It helps maintain timing and balance across these systems.

Gut and digestive effects
There are melatonin receptors in the gastrointestinal tract. It may support gut lining integrity, reduce inflammation, and help regulate motility—one reason it’s sometimes explored for reflux or irritable bowel-type symptoms.

Mood and brain function
Because it regulates sleep-wake cycles, melatonin indirectly affects mood, cognitive clarity, and stress resilience. Disrupted circadian rhythms are strongly linked to anxiety and depressive symptoms.
