L’Glutamine

L-glutamine is a conditionally essential amino acid—the most abundant one in your bloodstream. Under normal conditions your body makes enough, but during stress (illness, inflammation, heavy exercise, gut damage) demand can exceed supply.

What it does for the stomach and gut

1) Fuels the gut lining (enterocytes)
Cells lining your intestines use L-glutamine as a primary energy source. Adequate supply supports rapid cell turnover and repair of the mucosal surface.

2) Helps maintain the intestinal barrier
It supports tight junction proteins (the “seals” between gut cells). This can reduce excessive intestinal permeability (often called “leaky gut”), which is associated with bloating, food sensitivities, and systemic inflammation.

3) Supports healing of irritation and ulcers
By promoting mucosal repair and mucus production, L-glutamine may aid recovery in gastritis and peptic irritation (adjunctive support, not a standalone cure).

4) Modulates inflammation in the GI tract
It can help downregulate pro-inflammatory signaling in the gut, which is relevant in conditions like Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (evidence is stronger for supportive use than for primary treatment).

5) Aids recovery after gut stress
Useful after infections, antibiotic use, alcohol irritation, or intense physical stress, where the lining may be compromised.

How it’s typically used

  • Common dose range: 5–10 g per day, often split (e.g., morning and evening).
  • Timing: On an empty stomach is often recommended for gut support.
  • Forms: Powder (most common), capsules.

What it’s not

  • It’s not a quick “acid reducer” like antacids or PPIs. Its role is structural and metabolic—supporting repair and barrier function over time.

Safety and cautions

  • Generally well tolerated at standard doses.
  • Use caution or get medical guidance if you have kidney or liver disease, are pregnant, or have a history of certain neurological conditions.
  • If you have active ulcers, severe symptoms, or are on medications (e.g., PPIs, steroids), it should complement—not replace—medical care.
